Why choose Latin?


The study of Latin at a level helps you to develop not only a sensitive and analytical approach to language but also an interest in the literary, historical and cultural features of the ancient world. A desire to read ancient literature in its original language is key, and students will be encouraged to acquire the literary skills which enable them to fully appreciate both prose and poetry. Moreover, students will be expected to develop research and analytical skills that will empower them to become independent learners.


What study skills do you need?


  • An interest to develop your vocabulary and grammar skills in order to understand and translate original Latin texts
  • an understanding of the social, cultural and historical contexts for the set texts, their authors and audiences.


What are the aims of the course?


Students will acquire both specific knowledge and important transferable skills such as analysing sources and developing independent, critical, and evaluative approaches. Students will also learn to formulate and support an argument and will gain a valuable understanding of cultures very different to their own.


GCSE requirements


At least a grade 7 in Latin GCSE.


Course content


Students build their knowledge of vocabulary and linguistic structures through reading and studying unseen prose and verse texts in Latin. Students also study two Latin prose (Tacitus, Cicero) and two Latin verse literature (Virgil, Horace) set texts in depth.


Further education and career opportunities


The study of a level classics qualifications can often lead to the university-level study of Classics, Drama, English, History, History of Art, Philosophy and Politics, however, information from UCAS shows that students who studied classics went on to study in such diverse disciplines as medicine, veterinary science and chemistry
